If you snore, have trouble breathing when you sleep, or find yourself tired and dozing off during the day, you could be suffering from sleep apnoea. People with high blood pressure, obesity problems or a higher BMI are especially at risk of developing sleep apnoea. Gastric banding and weight loss surgery in Sydney can drastically impact and even eradicate the incidence of this condition for obese clients.
What is sleep apnoea?
Sleep apnoea is a condition that occurs due to a narrowing of the airways, most often related to excess weight around the throat. Characterised by disturbed sleep, daytime fatigue and poor concentration, sufferers of the condition experience frequent sleep interruptions due to a momentary blockage of airflow
Who is at risk?
While approximately one in every 20 Australian adults is believed to be affected by the condition, this number increases radically for overweight and obese people, with estimates placed as high as 71 per cent among those who are morbidly obese.
Side effects of sleep apnoea
While those afflicted with the condition may not be aware of anything more severe than nagging tiredness or a disgruntled sleeping partner, the potential health implications can be far more sinister. Increased risk of heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure and cardiac arrhythmia are all associated with sleep apnoea.
Although obesity is understood to be one of the most common causes of sleep apnoea, a modest reduction in weight of as little as 10 per cent can help to reduce the severity of the condition by as much as 50%.

It’s hard to see images of celebrities on television and in the media and not feel a sense of inadequacy and a desire to emulate that image. It may sound like a cliché, but looking and feeling your best really is a simple matter of eating the right foods and getting plenty of exercise, and avoiding unhealthy celebrity diets.
Specific diets that may be hyped in the media and endorsed by certain celebrities are nothing more than low carb and low calorie fads that do not lead to a sustainably healthier lifestyle. Following an extreme fad diet generally results in short-term weight loss, however other side effects of these diets range from constipation, mineral deficiencies or fatigue through to heart disease or osteoporosis.
The Raw Food Diet, Blood Group Diet, Baby Food Diet and Dukan Diet, all popular celebrity-endorsed diets, are far too low in calories and essential nutrients to be sustainable, and their long-term consumption can lead to some very serious complications. They will also leave you vulnerable to instantly gaining back any weight you may have lost as soon as you resume a normal eating pattern. These diets don’t allow for the development of the necessary lifestyle changes needed to create a fit and healthy body. They are a short-term fix to a long-term problem.
There is no one “wonder-diet” that you can follow without some nutritional or health risk. It may be obvious, but the best weight loss advice is to eat a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables and lean protein, as well as unprocessed whole-grains and breads.
